Tourism, the life blood of the valley, would be impossible without the constant stream of food and fuel these men (and and the porters their brothers in arms) bring up the valley. But for the most part they are not Sherpa, they are from the warm, humid lowlands. They lack the Sherpa’s genetic advantage at altitude so hiking at 14,000 feet in a snow storm was as hard on them as it was on me.
