I needed a place to stay for a few months while I’ll be looking for work, hoping to earn some money. I stayed my first week in the @yhaaustralia hostel, looking for a cheap apartment. What I didn’t know is that Darwin is Australia’s most expensive city, and when in Sydney or Melbourne you can find a rent at $200/week, in Darwin you won’t find anything good for less than $250-$300/week, if you want your own room. So I decided to look after other options, and I thought of HelpX. This is an international volunteering program, like Wwoofing, but for any kind of help. I had already created an account in Belgium, so I sent a couple of requests to people that sound interesting. This is how I met Nicholas & Hiltrud. These guys are both 50 years-old, but live like a 25 yo couple. Nicholas is a photographer - @ngphotographics - and he needed someone to build his new website. As I built a lot of websites the last past years, we found a perfect agreement. In exchange of free food & accommodation, I would do his new website. But after 2 days, this exchange quickly became a true friendship, and after the week I spent with the guys, we stayed in touch and we saw each other at least once a week for the next 3 months ! Nicholas & Hiltrud truly became my friends and they surely are my best encounter of my year in Australia. We have so much in common, we share the same ideas about life and travel. I truly hope to see them again in the future ! After my week with them, I needed a new place to stay, and I found the Elliot family. Cassie was also looking for a web designer to help her with her business website. Perfect for me :) The first deal was to stay with them for 3 weeks, but after a few days only, Cass and her husband Lou offered me to stay 3 months, til I leave Darwin ! They were so kind to me, and their kids - Amy & Jack - became like my own brothers & sisters.
