Hotels-live.com/blog - Great Egret, Crissy Field, Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @natgeo. Over 2/3 of the world's largest cities are located in estuaries. Through development most have lost the majority of their tidal marshes. San Francisco is unique among the large cities in that there is a major effort underway to restore some of the lost wetlands. One of the shining examples of this restoration is the tidal marsh at Crissy Field. A former U.S. Army airfield the marsh site was used as a dumping ground and then filled and covered over to create an airfield. In 2003, part of the original marsh was restored and opened to the public. via instagram.com/p/3CU_bJoVQp/ via http://www.flickr.com/photos/comparateur_hotelslive/17827010330
