At this time of year, the Humpback whales are returning south to their sub-antarctic feeding grounds after spending time breeding off the Queensland coast. Fortunately whale encounters today are very different to those in the 1830s, when Tasmania was home to 32 shore-based whaling stations, from Recherche Bay in the south to Bicheno on the East Coast.
